FLAMA in Oxnard is a youth-led space that meets twice a month. Youth in the space build on their leadership skills and discuss and organize around issues that they feel passionately about. This year, the youth decided to continue working on the Education Equity campaign.
At the end of academic year 2015/2016, FLAMA youth conducted a community forum and started a postcard drive to support aligning the A-G requirements with the high school requirements. The youth feel that by aligning the A-G requirements, less social barriers will persist and more students will have access to these courses.
Since then, the youth have collected over 1,000 postcards from their peers in their schools and community. They have now executed two well-attended town hall meetings to continue pushing the District. The OUHSD has committed to passing a resolution on April 2018. Furhtermore, our efforts for #EducationEquity have branched out and are continuing throughout our Santa Barbara and Santa Maria regions.
